Wendell Ricks Bastow

Wendell Ricks Bastow, of Medford, Ore., passed away on Friday, January 21, 2011. He was born August 30, 1920, in Logan, Utah, to Joseph and Irene Bastow.

He married Mora Jane Somers in September 1944, in Maine, She died in Ashland, Ore., in 1984. He later married Jean Church, in Phoenix, Ore., in 1985.

Ric graduated from UC Berkley with a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering. From 1943 to 1946, he was a second grade lieuetenant in the U.S. Navy. He also served for ten years in the Naval Reserves. He was employed at Raytheon Manufacturing Company and then later worked as the chief engineer for the research firm of Pickard and Burns. He also worked for the Lockheed Missile and Space Division.

Ric was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. As a member, he served as a ward clerk, financial clerk, and he and his wife, Jean, were temple workers in the Portland, Ore., temple. They later served an LDS mission in London, England, in the Family History Center.

Ric loved working with computers and ham radios. He also enjoyed genealogy and gardening.

He is survived by his wife, Jean Bastow; her children, Cal (Lisa) Cannon and Sherry Bonfigli; his daughter, Marion (Gabriel) Garcia; his granddaughter, Kimberly (Tom) Corcoran; his brother, Paul (Beverly); and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 2900 Juanipero Way, Medford, Ore., at 1:00 p.m., Monday, January 31, 2011. Bishop Rick McClure will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the LDS Church Humanitarian Aid Fund.
