Seth Larson, a long time civic and church leader, died suddenly at his home in Silver City last Wednesday morning, January 31. He was 83. The Deceased came to Silver City in 1925 as the acting manager of the J.C. Penney Company Store. Shortly thereafter he became manager, a position which he held until his retirement in 1956.
Over the years Mr. Larson served in a wide variety of community activities. He was a County Commissioner for two terms, serving as chairman one term, a member of the City Council, served fifteen years on the board of directors of the Chamber of Commerce, was a president of the Rotary Club, and at the end of World War II received a citation for his personal efforts in the sale of war bonds.
He was among the leaders in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and donated all of the land for the first Mormon Church in Silver City.
For his work with the Boy Scouts Mr. Larson received the Silver Beaver award, and in 1945 was appointed to the National Council of the Boy Scouts of America.
He actively participated in many other community activities, and was at one time treasurer of the local chapter of the American Red Cross. Marcel Mortenson, who gave the eulogy at the funeral services, described the deceased “As the greatest peace maker you have ever seen.”
He is survived by his wife, Gretta of Silver City, three daughters, Mrs. Ruth Merz of Silver City, Mrs. Inez Candiello of Bisbee, Arizona, Mrs. Louise Sterchi of Albuquerque, two sisters, Mrs. Josie Teeples of Pomerene, Ariz., Mrs. Lexie Carter of Miami, Ariz., eleven grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. Funeral services were Friday in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Silver City. Burial following in Memory Lane Cemetery, serving as pallbearers were, Orson Stailey, Horace Garcia, Robyn Doty, Robert Johnson, Gary Stailey and David Hardt.
