Robert Grenfell Hammond, 82, of Logan, died Monday March 8, 1999 at the Logan Regional Hospital.

He was born Feb. 14, 1917, in Portland, Ore., a son of William Arthur and Abbie Grenfell Hammond.  He married Claire Larsen on Jul 17, 1943, in San Diego, Calif.  Their marriage was later solemnized in the Logan LDS Temple.

He graduated from Utah State University in 1948 and received his master’s degree in 1951.  He pursued graduate studies at the University of Wyoming, Harvard University and Brigham Young University.

He taught science and math in high schools in Washington and Idaho and was assistant professor of mathematics at USU from 1956 until his retirement in 1983.

He was a member of the LDS Church and served in various stake and ward callings.

He served as president of the Utah Teachers of Mathematics, referred for high school football and umpired softball, served on the faculty men’s club and state textbook selection committee, and was a lifetime member of the National Education Association.

He was a veteran of World War II and served two years in the Navy in the South Pacific.

He is survived by his wife, Claire L. Hammond, Logan; two sons and on daughter, Robert G and Hilda, Costa Mesa, Calif., Karyn, Sandy, Utah, William C. and Alaine, West Valley, Utah; ten grandchildren and one great-grandchild; and two sisters, Jewell Westervelt, Kelso, Wash., and Shirley Livengood, Raymond, Wash.

Funeral services will be at noon Thursday in the Allen-Hall Mortuary.  Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the mortuary and one hour prior to services.  Interment will be in the Logan Cemetery with graveside military rites by American Legion Posts 12 and 7
