ST. GEORGE – Paul Marshall Cardon, age 88, of St. George peacefully passed away at his home on January 19, 2003, surrounded by members of his family. Paul was born on November 30, 1914 in Vernon, Utah to Earnest William Cardon and Anne Elizabeth Marshall. He was the second of 9 children.

Paul married Alda Schow in Escalante, Utah on May 15, 1936. She passed away on September 24, 1954. Their marriage was later solemnized at the Manti Temple.

Paul married Gayla Barker on May 23, 1955 in the Manti Temple.

Paul spent his early years in Salt Lake City where he developed his life long love for golf while working as a caddy. This love of golf carried into his retirement years as he worked and played at Southgate and Red Hills Golf Courses. Paul spent his early years working through the depression to help support his younger sibling. He eventually made his way to Escalante, Utah to work in the C.C.C. Camps. He fell in love with that area and always referred to it as his home.

Paul enlisted in the Navy and served four years during WWII along with three of his brothers. All four were fortunate to have returned home safely.

Paul was a man of many talents. Most of his years were spent as a General & Finish Carpenter. He was very skilled at this profession and took great pride in his accomplishments. His skills helped to employ him in projects such as the Hungry Horse Dam in Montana, and the Glen Canyon Dam Project. He was one of the first assigned to the Glen Canyon Dam project and was involved in the ceremony of cutting the fence on the Arizona/Utah border to start the project. He was always very proud of his involvement in the Glen Canyon Dam project. He also worked as a carpenter on the I-15 Interstate project through the Virgin River Gorge.

He was an avid outdoors man too. He loved hunting, fishing and, of course, golfing. He had spent countless hours in the outdoors of southern Utah hunting and fishing, and always had a story to tell about one of his adventures.

Paul is survived by his wife Gayla of 47 years, who has cared for him with great love, especially during his last few months.

Paul’s surviving children include: Paul Michael (Karen) Cardon of Delaware, Ohio; Bruce (Jacquelyn) Cardon of St. George; Phil (Dana) Cardon of Wasilla, Alaska; Susan (Mike) Smith of St. George; and a step-so Ferrel G. Roundy of Taft, California, Sisters: Joyce Ludwig of St. George and Audrey Miller of Aurora, Colorado; and a brother, Rowland (Annette) Cardon of Summerfield, Florida; and sister-in-law Betty Barker of St. George. He was also very proud of his 13 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

His beloved daughter, Joan Mulundo of Ithaca, New York, who has fought a courageous battle with brain cancer this past year, passed away only a few hours after her father on Sunday evening. How peaceful it will be for them to be together again.

He was preceded in death by his first wife Alda, his daughter LaDean Stojakovich, Sisters: May Merrill, Melba Webber, and Zilla Veto and Brothers: Roy Cardon and Allen Cardon.

Paul Cardon was an honest man who enjoyed his family and friends. He worked to live, but lived to enjoy all that life had to offer him. He was always ready to give a helping hand or words of advice to those in need. His quick wit and endless sense of humor will be sincerely missed by those who knew and loved him.

A visitation will be held Tuesday, January 21, 2003 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Metcalf Mortuary on 300 West St. George Blvd. A Memorial and Grave side services will be held the following day, Wednesday, January 22, 2003, at 11 a. m. at the Tonaquint Cemetery in St. George. Special thanks to the Staff of IHC Hospice who helped Paul and his family during his last days here on earth.
