Beloved brother, husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Melvin Johnson Cardon, 87, passed away peacefully at home October 3, 2018
He was born June 1, 1931 in El Paso, Texas to Mary Johnson Cardon and Joseph Harold Cardon. Mel was born into a loving family with 7 brothers and sister.
He attended Brigham Young University where he met his lifelong sweetheart Ada Jean Burns and then left to serve an LDS mission in Uruguay, South America for 2 ½ years.
Mel served in the Korean war stateside in the medical field and later returned to BYU where he received his bachelor’s degree and then earned his master’s from University of Texas in foreign trade. He worked in Austin, El Paso and Denver in the oil industry and took his family to Tripoli Libya and Saudi Arabia where they experienced the turmoil of the Middle East during the mid-sixties and seventies.
In 1974 Mel and Ada returned to El Paso where he managed several businesses.
Mel served as Bishop of the El Paso 4th and 10th wards, on the High Council and served as a counselor in the Arizona, Tucson Mission. His last calling was as a sealer in Ciudad Juarez Temple in Juarez Mexico.
In 2007, Mel and Ada retired to Ontario, Oregon where they served in the Sunday School.
Mel was known for his photographic memory, quick wit and gift for gab. His favorite church calling was as a Gospel Doctrine Teacher. As Grandpa he will be remembered for his bedtime stories he called “whoppers”
Mel was preceded in death by his parents, younger sister Betty, brothers Wayne, Rodney and Earl. He is Survived by his wife Ada, sisters Hallie and Bonnie, brother Charles, children Paula Hytrek (Lonny Hytrek) of Ontario Oregon, Richard Cardon (Annette Cardon) of Provo Utah and James Cardon (Kathy Cardon) of Provo Utah. Mel was blessed with thirteen grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren
Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, October 10th at 11:00am at the Ontario LDS Stake Center at 1705 N.W. 4th Ave, Ontario Oregon. Viewing will be 1 hour prior to services.
