Marriner Paul Cardon, son of Louis Sanders Cardon and Winnifred Mae Bellamy, passed away peacefully on Nov. 9, 2023, at the age of 91.

Marriner was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico on May 17, 1932, and grew up primarily in Colorado. He attended the University of Utah where he joined the NROTC, and upon graduation entered active-duty military status. The majority of his time in the Navy was spent aboard the USS Wasp aircraft carrier. He earned his JD in Colorado and then moved with his young family to practice law in Arizona. Marriner was married to Ruth Hanks from 1957 to 1982 and together they had six children: Stephan, Laureen (Urquiaga), Roslyn (Wilson), Bradley, Lamont and Jared.

He split his time between Phoenix and Prescott, Arizona until moving entirely to Prescott in the later ’90s. He gave countless hours of volunteer service to municipal, charitable and religious organizations in both communities.

Marriner was in a long-term partnership with Gerald Bergstrom until Gerald’s death in 1993. In his later years he found love and comfort with Jerry Matiatos. They would have celebrated 20 years together this coming Spring.

Marriner is survived by his husband Jerry, his six children, 15 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren. He was privately interred at a Phoenix Cemetery on Thursday, Nov. 16. A Celebration of Life will be held at 3 p.m. at the Granite Peak Unitarian Universalist Congregation in Prescott on Saturday, Nov. 18. In lieu of flowers please make donations in memory of Marriner to Northland Cares, Prescott, AZ, 3112 Clearwater Drive Suite A, Prescott, AZ 86305 northlandcares.org.
