Marion Paul Thatcher passed away peacefully in Emmett, Idaho on July 28, 2012. He was born on March 4, 1925, in Eden, Arizona to Marion Plumb and Edith Cardon Thatcher. He was the eldest of six children. Paul was a state officer in the Future Farmers of America and graduated from Chandler (Arizona) High School in 1942. He attended the University of Arizona on an academic scholarship. Paul married Melva Bond in the Mesa Arizona LDS Temple on October 15, 1943. He was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1944 and honorably discharged in 1946. Paul and Melva moved their young family onto a farm in Homedale, Idaho in 1955. In addition to farming, he worked for J.C. Palumbo, J.R. Simplot, and the Homedale School District (20 years) where he was maintenance and transportation director. Melva passed away on August 21, 1986. Paul married Nellie Arnold on May 27, 1988. He was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He is remembered for his unconditional service to family, neighbors, and the community and is well-known for his prize-winning wood carvings.
Paul was preceded in death by his parents, sister Edith, wife Melva, son Terry, grandson Ian and Nellie’s daughter Ruth, grandsons Brian and Aaron, and granddaughter Virginia. He is survived by children Melvin Paul (Tuan), Roland (Arlene), Janell (Dan Miller), Darrel (Patricia), Virgil (DeAnn), Jeffrey (Melanie), Annette (Allen Ashby), and Mark (DeAnn), wife Nellie and children Esther (Vern Pollock), Robert (Cathy), George (Elaine), Paul (Susie), Mary, Phillip (Wendy), and Becky (Mark Davis), brothers Leavitt (Joyce), Kenneth (Norma), Morris (Carol), and John (Renae) and 66 grandchildren, 85 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great-grandchild, and numerous other loved ones.
The family expresses sincere gratitude for the kind services rendered by Emmett Serenity Living, Walter Knox Hospital, and Heart and Home Hospice and for funeral arrangements by Flahiff Funeral Chapel. The family also gives thanks for the spiritual and temporal support provided by family members and friends.
A viewing will be held on Friday, August 3, 2012 from 6:00PM-8:00PM at Flahiff Funeral Chapel, Homedale. Funeral services will be held at 11:00AM on Saturday, August 4, 2012 at the Homedale Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints with viewing one hour prior to service.
