Father-in-law of Josette Peney Cardon Hakes
Leo Benjamin Hakes passed away April 13, 2002, at his home. He succumbed to cancer. Mr. Hakes was born January 22, 1912, in Nester, California. He is survived by his wife, Balma Tietjen Hakes, of 68 years, 8 children, 36 grandchildren and 78 great grandchildren. Mr. Hakes in his career managed the M.R. Prestige Lumber Company in Alamogordo, NM and the National Gypsum branch in Phoenix. Later he managed the Facility and Service Dept. of Gold Bond National Gypsum branch in Phoenix. His live was filled with service in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He was instrumental in organizing the first church services in Alamogordo, NM, and served as the first Branch President. He was a Bishop of the Phoenix 18th ward, was a member of the Mesa Temple Presidency, and served a family history mission. A viewing will be held at 6-7:30pm on April 15th at the Camelview Ward building, 3920 N. 44th Place. The funeral service will begin at 10:30am on April 16th, at the LDS Stake Center, 2202 N. 74th St. One hour prior to service at 9:30am will be a viewing. The interment will follow at the Mesa City Cemetery. Arrangements Newcomer Family Mortuary.
