Joseph Walter Byrne

Joseph Walter Byrne was born 22 August 1855 in Ogden, Weber, Utah Territory to Moses and Catherine Cardon Byrne.

Joseph married Winifred Lenora Mumford on 30 September 1884 in Piedmont, Uinta, Wyoming at the age of 29. Winifred was born 5 July 1866 in Millville, Grant, Wisconsin to Allen Hice and Rhoda Robie Newton Washburn Mumford. In 1880 she was living in Cedar Valley, Hamilton, Nebraska. She was 18 years old when they married.

They had seven children, two girls and five boys. The first two were born in Piedmont, Uinta, Wyoming. Clarence Leslie was born 26 July 1885 and Cecil Mumford was born 16 October 1886. He died when he was 15 years old on 4 March 1902. Lenora Elvina was born 15 May 1888 in Aspen, Uinta, Wyoming. Myrtle Arabella was born 5 December 1889 in Uintah, Weber, Utah Territory. The last three were born in Aspen, Uinta, Wyoming. Ralph Lafayette was born 24 April 1895; Cardon was born 13 February 1896 and died 15 November 1896; and Joseph Myrl was born 3 April 1897.

Joseph died on 5 September 1922 in Piedmont, Uinta, Wyoming at the age of 67 and was buried in Piedmont. Winifred died on 24 December 1943 in Robertson, Uinta, Wyoming at the age of 77 and was buried on 27 December 1943 in Evanston, Uinta, Wyoming.

Notes: The 1910 US Census for Election District No 9, Uinta, Wyoming shows the Byrnes family consists of Joseph (Head), Winnie (Wife), Leslie (Son), Cecil (Son), Myrtle (Daughter), Ralph (Son), and Myrl (Son).

The Salt Lake Herald, Wednesday, May 28, 1902, on page 3 reports that Winnie Byrne, who was legally separated from Joseph W. Byrne on grounds of non-support, was given custody of five children and an equitable division of the property, amounting to $8,000. In May of 1902 their living children were Clarence “Leslie”, Myrtle Arabella, Ralph Lafayette, and Joseph Myrl. Their deceased children were Cecil Mumford (March 4, 1902), Lenora Elvina (1893), and Cardon (1896). The fifth child could be Alvin ~ age 2 in 1902. He is listed as a son living with Joseph W. Byrne in the 1920 census. At the time of the census, he was 10.

The US Federal Census for 1910, shows Joseph W. Byrne, age 54, living in Albany, Wyoming, USA as divorced, head of household, and living with Leslie C. Byrne a son.

The US Federal Census for 1920 shows Winefred L Byrne, age 53, living in Oregon as head of household with son, Ralph L Byrne, age 24, and lists her as divorced. The 1920 census shows Joseph W. Byrnes living in Robertson, Uinta, Wyoming, USA as a divorced head of household with sons J Myrl Byrnes age 21 and Alvin age 10. Alvin’s birthplace is listed as Wyoming and shows his mother as being born in Wisconsin (Winnifred was born in Millville, Grant Wisconsin).

The US Federal Census for 1930 shows Winifred L. Byrne, age 64, living in Piedmont, Uinta, Wyoming with her son’s family, Leslie Byrne.
