Ruland Cardon’s Funeral Report – Facebook Post 3 March 2017
Neil gave Phil’s life story. He was an avid fisher and hunter. He graduated from bakers’ school in Texas. He served a mission in Kentucky, Tennessee and West Virginia. He worked for City Bakery in Durango where he was able to get jobs for his siblings and others there. He married his wife Dene in the Mesa Temple. They were blessed with three children. Their daughter passed away because of complications of diabetes. He took a job as a baker for City Market in Moab, Utah. He loved taking care of his wife, family, house and gardening. He was very inventive. He was able to design and build a way to heat water through a solar system on his roof and also heat water by running water through tubes that go through his wood burning stove.
Boyd gave a spiritual talk on the plan of salvation and memories of Phil.
Lavor gave his memories of Phil. Working at City Bakery and fishing with and hunting with Phil. He played football and did track. His best event in track was the 800-yard dash.
My talk was of memories of Phil which included him making a high jump and pole vault pit at the corner lot south of the house. I went fishing with him at the Animas River. I tried to pull the line out and couldn’t. Phil pulled in the line saying that I had got a snag which turned out to be a 3 lb. fish. Working for Phil at City Bakery cleaning the floors and helping him at City Market when we would visit him in Moab. When Sue and I were married we traveled with grandma and grandpa to Durango because we did not have a car yet and stayed overnight with Phil. He was so accepting of her which I really appreciated. He was always willing to give gardening advice and share some things that he had discovered that help with his garden to produce more. Once I went fishing with him, Boyd and Neil to Henry’s Lake. We caught fish at Henry’s Lake outlet and cooked them in his camper. Then the next day we rented a boat and when fishing on the lake. We had set the anchor and my line started going out and said that the boat was drifting. Phil said we were anchored, and it must have been a large fish which soon broke the line. Sue remembers that at family reunions he was the one that got the game of horseshoes going and also making sure no one cheated at card games like grandma. The other children remember Phil at reunions giving all the nieces and nephews hugs and calling them by name. They were also impressed by the way he treated Dene. I also bore my testimony of the plan of salvation and the great reunion he had with his parents, daughter, two sisters and other relatives.
Joe gave his memories of his dad and bore his testimony of the gospel.
LaMar gave his memories of his dad. One experience that was special to him was once he went hunting. His dad had told him that if he needed help, he could always pray to Heavenly Father for help. He said that his parents needed the meat so he prayed that he would be able to get an elk so that they would have the meat they needed. After getting up he turned and there came a big bull elk which he was able to kill and then he had to get help to get the elk out.
His Bishop spoke that when he was their home teacher, he always enjoyed home teaching them. He said he really enjoyed his home and taking care of Dene, the yard and garden. He really did not want to go to the long-term care unit with Dene, but he knew he could no longer care for himself or his home.
I hope this will be helpful in knowing about the funeral. Hope everything is going well with you and yours.
Love,
Ruland
