Dies At Age 88

John Paul Cardon, 88, lifelong resident of Logan, active LDS church worker, businessman and civic worker, died Thursday following a heart ailment.

He would have observed his 89th birthday anniversary Nov. 19.

On that day in 1866 he was born in Logan, a son of Paul and Susanna Goudin Cardon, early pioneers in the area.

Mr. Cardon served on a mission in the southern states for the LDS Church from 1892-94. Following his return to Utah, he was employed 4 years with the Denver and Rio Grande Western railroad, working at Salina, Richfield, Elsinore, Belnap and Provo. Then for two years he was associated with the Wasatch Store Company at Castlegate.

Earlier in his life Mr. Cardon had taken part in construction work and for a time he carried mail in horse and buggy throughout the southern end of Cache County.

He was married to Euphemia King, July 11, 1894. She passed away in 1900. June 17, 1903, he married Mary Sorenson, who died in February of 1947. Mr. Cardon married Sophia Baker in February of 1952.

Five years he took care of farm interests in Tooele and Cache counties and then became affiliated with Cardon Company as a partner with his brothers. This firm was later dissolved, and he became treasurer of the Cardon Realty Company. In recent years he had been associated with the Hickman Abstract Company.

Mr. Cardon was ward clerk for Logan 5th LDS Ward for six years, first counselor in the ward 25 years and was an officiator at Logan LDS Temple 16 years.

A son, Paul Cardon, was killed during World War II, in the Battle of the Bulge.

Surviving are his widow, Logan; children; Beryl C. Ruchti, Boston, James King Cardon, Salt Lake City, Ezra B. Cardon, Rulon Cardon, Ogden; Katherine C. Heither, Salmon, Idaho; 19 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren and the following brothers and sisters: Mary C. Merrill, Preston. Ida.; Sarah C. Turner, Washington, D.C.; Joseph E. Cardon, Logan; Moses G. Cardon, Ogden; Hyrum M. Cardon, Benson; Amanda C. Ricks, Smithfield; Ernest Cardon, Salt Lake City; Violet C. Walker, Hollywood, and Katie C. Jensen, Ogden.

Funeral services will be conducted Monday at noon in the Logan 5th-19th LDS Ward Chapel by Bishop Zachary Champlin, 5th ward bishop.

Friends may call at the Kenneth Lindquist Mortuary Sunday from 7-9 p.m. and Monday from 10:30 a.m. until noon. Burial will be in Logan Cemetery.

LOGAN–John Paul Cardon, 88, Logan, died in local hospital Thursday of heart ailment. Born Nov. 19, 1866, Logan, to John Paul and Susanna Goudin Cardon. Married Mary Sorenson June 17, 1903. She died February 1947. Married Sophia Baker Feb. 29, 1952, in Logan Temple, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Survivors, widow, sons, daughters, Beryl C. Ruchti, Boston, Mass.; James King, Salt Lake City; Ezra B. and Rulon, Ogden; Katherine C. Heither, Salmon, Idaho; 19 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, 4 brothers and 5 sisters.

John Paul Cardon Sr.

John Paul Cardon Sr., Logan Utah, died yesterday afternoon. He was one of the first children born in Logan.

He freighted in Montana and Wyoming, worked on the old narrow-gauge railroad through here, worked on the Southern Pacific and was present at the driving of the golden spike connecting the transcontinental railroad, and was one of the owners of the Cardon Real Estate Co. in Logan. He was an active LDS church member.

Survivors include his widow, Sophia, children Mrs. Beryl Cardon Ruchti, Boston, Mass.; King, Salt Lake City; Mrs. Katherine Heither, near Salmon; Ezra and Rulon, Ogden; 14 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren. Mrs. E.W. Bronson, 542 East Lander, is a grandchild.

Services will be Monday noon.
