Jessie Van Sweden

Jessie Irene Guild Van Sweden, 93, passed away of natural causes Friday, March 7, 2008, at her daughter’s home in Hyde Park, Utah.

Jessie was the oldest child born July 17, 1914, in Urie, Wyo., to Robert Evan and Isabel Hunter Sneddon Guild. At age five, the family moved to Evanston, Wyo., where Jessie spent her childhood, graduating from Evanston High School. Jessie attended Weber College where she met her future husband, Henry Van Sweden. Jessie graduated from the University of Wyoming with a teaching degree. She taught grade school in Big Piney, Lyman and Uinta County, Wyo., and one year in Garland, Utah.

Jessie and Henry were married Dec. 30, 1937. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Logan LDS Temple Dec. 10, 1954. Following their marriage they moved to Tremonton, Utah, where Henry was employed at the Utah Power & Light Company. Jessie would accompany Henry on his meter reading route and became acquainted with the people of Tremonton whom she grew to love. She and Henry were true “Tremontonites”. Jessie and Henry provided a much loved home for their two children: Robert Carl (Lynn Ellen, deceased; Debora) of Costa Mesa, Calif., and Laurel Kay (David) Hancey of Hyde Park, Utah.

Jessie was a convert to the LDS Church and held many stake and ward positions. She loved working in the Primary and Relief Society. In addition to teaching school, she worked at J.C. Penney in Tremonton. She was the Tremonton city librarian for 28 years, a position that she loved dearly. She was a charter member of the Literary Guild and the Tremonton Civic League.

Jessie is survived by her two children; four grandchildren, April (Garrick) Frost of Lake Forrest, Calif., Chad (Bethany) Van Sweden of Santa Monica, Calif., MaKell (Matt) Jensen of Logan, Utah, and Branson Smith, Hyde Park, Utah. She is also survived by two step-grandchildren, D.J. (Katie Jo) Hancey of Richmond, Utah, and Ashley Hancey of Ogden, Utah. She has five great-grandchildren, Madison, Kelsey and Alexander Frost, Caleb and Colin Van Sweden; and one step great-grandchild, Willow Jo Hancey.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Henry; her parents; two younger sisters; one younger brother; and her daughter-in-law.

A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, March 14, 2008, at the Tremonton Stake Center, 660 N. 300 East, Tremonton, Utah. A viewing will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, March 13, 2008, at Rogers and Taylor Funeral Home, 111 N. 100 East, Tremonton, Utah, and Friday from 10 to 11:45 a.m. at the church. Interment will be at the Tremonton Riverview Cemetery.

The family would like to thank Jessie’s many neighbors, friends and LDS ward members, the Tremonton EMT’s and first responders, the Tremonton Valley and Logan Regional Hospital staff and a special thank you to the members of Thatcher Brooks Home Health and Hospice for their kind and loving treatment.
