Graveside services for Harry W. Greene, 85, will be conducted at 11 a.m., on Wednesday, April 30, 2008, with military rites by Fort Bridger American Legion. He died April 27, 2008, at his home in Fort Bridger.
He was born on April 11, 1923, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Bernard Mumford and Myrtle Arabelle (Byrne) Greene. He married Alta Maxine Casto in Evanston on March 11, 1946. He served his country in the Army-Air Force during WWII. During the war, he delivered mail by DC-3 airplane to troops. He was a member of the crew that dropped the flag to ground troops at Iwo Jima that was raised at Mount Suribachi on Feb. 23, 1945. The raising of that flag has become a patriotic symbol of WWII to generations. He was a member of the American Legion.
He enjoyed hunting rocks, fishing and ranching. He grew up working on the family ranch in Robertson and returned to ranching upon his discharge from the military. They later moved to Medicine Bow, where they owned and operated a motel and restaurant. Upon their return to the valley, he worked construction where he was a heavy equipment operator before going to work for FMC and retiring in 1985.
He is survived by his wife, Alta “Maxine” Greene, Ft. Bridger; a son, Danny Joseph Greene; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Owen Pahl Greene, a daughter, Claudia Jean Greene, two sisters, three brothers, and his parents. Services are under the direction of Crandall Funeral Home.
