Brief Life History of Hallie Marie

Hallie Marie Cardon was born on 12 May 1926, in San Antonio, Cuauhtémoc, Chihuahua, Mexico. Her father, Joseph Harold Cardon, was 21 and her mother, Mary Johnson, was 22. She was the first born of Joseph and Mary Cardon. Subsequently she had five brothers followed by two sisters. One of the sisters, Betty Jane, only lived a day. The names of the siblings were Joseph Wayne, Rodney Harold, Melvin Johnson, Earl Leon, Charles (Dick) Howard, Betty Jane, and Bonnie June. Hallie outlived them all except Dick and Bonnie.
By the time she was 3 years old, she was living in El Paso, El Paso County, Texas where she remained during most of her childhood. The 1940 census indicates at age 14 she was living in El Paso, Texas.
She married Dr. Parley Merrell Pratt PhD on 4 August 1944. They went to Logan Utah for the wedding and were married in the Logan Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. She was 18 and he was 25. In October of the year following her marriage, her first child, Donna Marie, was born in Lubbock, Texas. On the 25th of July 1947, her first son, Parley Merrill Jr. was born in Salt Lake City, Utah. Another daughter, Marcella, was born in 1948. She appears in the 1950 census in Bountiful, Utah. Her husband is not shown on that census; however her occupation category is 2: Keeping House. In 1951, Vernon Harold was born followed by Sylvia who was born June 3 and died June 8 in 1954 in El Paso, Texas.
Marcella married Khosesro Fatemi July 26, 1969 in Los Angeles, California.
In 1972, on the 15th of April, when her son Vern Harold Pratt was married to Kathleen Brittain, the marriage announcement indicated that Hallie and her husband Merrell were living in Abadan, Iran. They were referred to as “Prof. and Mrs. Merrell Pratt, Abadan, Iran.” Vern was a 1969 graduate of Leysin American School in Switzerland. Vern and Kathleen were married in Lewisville, Texas. The announcement was published in the Rapid City Journal (Rapid City, SD), Sunday, May 14, 1972.
In 1973, her Daughter Donna Marie married Duane Decker in June. When Hallie was 51, on August 16, 1977, her husband, Dr. Parley Merrill Pratt died of pneumonia due to cancer complications. At the time he was professor of marketing at Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro, TN. On the 13th of May 1979, daughter Donna passed away in Nashville, Tennessee and was buried in the Nashville National Cemetery having served in the army until she retired 25 Sep 1978. Hallie became the Executrix of Donna’s estate.
Mary Johnson, her mother, died when Hallie was 63 years old on the 20th of March 1990 in El Paso, Texas. Her father, Joseph Harold Cardon, passed away a couple of years later also in El Paso, Texas on the 4th of February 1992. Her father went by Hal, so the name Hallie was after him.
Her son, Parley Merrill Pratt Jr., died March 28, 2014, in La Luz, Otero County, New Mexico and was buried in the Our Lady of Light Catholic Cemetery in April. At this time Hallie was 87.
Linnea Cardon shared the following:
I had an opportunity to visit with Hallie on 23 April 2018 – just before her 92 birthday. She impressed me with just how spry and witty she was. Hallie goes for several walks around the neighborhood each day (totaling about a mile in distance.) She enjoys her little stuffed duck. When you pinch the wing of the duck, it begins to play a tune and bounce around. Hallie was dancing around with it! (“You just can’t listen to that tune without wanting to get up and dance,” she explained.)
Hallie also shared with me some of her childhood recollections:
She used to swim as a girl.
Growing up she didn’t have any books at home. They were too poor. They would go to the library to borrow some.
During the Great Depression, her brother Rodney wore her shoes.
The nuns at school said Hallie talked incessantly in 3rd grade. Hallie had to come home and look up the word “incessantly”! Hallie claims, “Talking is a family talent handed down generation after generation.”
In July 2019, Hallie went to dinner with her brother Charles (Dick) and his wife Jacqui along with David and Linnea Cardon and Marcella and Hasro Fatemi in Las Vegas, NV. They dined at Olive Gardon which had been arranged by Marcella. Hallie and her brother and his wife were going to split a black-tie mousse cake, but Hallie liked chocolate so much that she ate the whole thing and licked the plate clean, so her brother and sister-in-law ordered another to split. This was probably the last time Hallie and Dick saw each other in this life. It was a real treat to see them talking and teasing each other. Hallie died on 21 March 2020, in Las Vegas, Clark, Nevada, United States, at the age of 93. Her brother Charles (Dick) Cardon passed away shortly thereafter in December of that same year. She is survived by her daughter Marcella, her son Vern, and her sister Bonne June Wheelhouse.
