Guy N. Cardon, father, well known Logan businessman, community leader and supporter, passed away on Christmas Day 2006 at Terrace Grove in Logan. Guy Nebeker Cardon was born on January 24, 1919 in Logan, Utah, one of six children to Ruby Nebeker and Orson Guy Cardon. He attended Logan city schools through high school. He graduated from Utah State Agricultural College with a Bachelors Degree in Economics.
Guy married Vera Joyce Johnson of Mesa, Arizona and they became parents of three children: Alice Cardon Crockett (Alan) of Idaho Falls; Joel Guy Cardon (Claire) of Logan; and Zoe Grehta Cardon (Andy Dolan) of Mansfield Center, Connecticut.
Guy wore many hats. As the proprietor of the Bluebird Restaurant and Candy Company, begun by his father O. Guy in 1914, his primary job was to satisfy his patrons’ appetites and to lift their spirits. Dressed in his traditional bow tie and dress suit, Guy not only warmly greeted his patrons with a smile and a genuine “How are you?”, but would also take off his suit jacket, roll up his shirt sleeves and help with the physical work of the Bluebird. He could cook in the kitchen, clear and set tables, add fresh Bear Lake raspberries to freshly churned vanilla ice cream, dip a chocolate (though, he would admit, not as well as the ‘dipping ladies’), cater a banquet, reception or dinner party. He worked early to late, often taking a quick break at home in the afternoon and returning for late lunch, dinner, and special event crowds. He worked side by side with hundreds of fellow Bluebird employees, many of whom still respond with, “Oh, I worked at the Bluebird with Guy.” The Bluebirds of Happiness were the chocolates—a box of “Bluebirds” is still one of the nicest of gifts.
For many years, Guy was an active, productive member of local, county and state committees and boards. His input included ‘the big picture,’ knowledge of the subject, history of the subject and a sense of community. He kept a world view, attuned to current events, history, science, art and music—everything interested him.
Guy was a club member, including Rotary, Men’s and “The Bluebird Coffee Club.” He greatly valued his good friends; visiting and drinking morning coffee at The Bluebird, fishing mountain rivers, streams and lakes; adventuring to events and places that needed to be seen, heard and applauded. Guy felt lucky in having so many good friends for so long a time.
Throughout his life, with family, friends, and alone, he loved to motor through the beautiful Logan canyon to his beloved Bear Lake cabin. Guy was an eclectic artist; a poet of spare verse; a philosopher; a reader; a practical joker; a caring, cheerful cultivator of friends and gardens. He was a Good Samaritan—always encouraging people to do their best and to “keep their spirits up.”
Guy is survived by his three children; by four grandchildren, Hilary Horton-Brown (Roger) and Jack E. Horton III (Jaynie) of Idaho, and Emma Joyce and Lucy Claire Cardon of Logan; by two great-grand children, Siera Jane and Cortland Jack Horton of Idaho; by his sister Pauline Whitehead of Logan; and by nephews and nieces. His wife Joyce preceded him in death (April 2006), as have three sisters and one brother.
A community memorial service for Guy Nebeker Cardon was held Tuesday January 2, 2007 at noon at Allen-Hall Mortuary, 34 East Center Street, Logan.
