ETHEL CARDON WHITNELL HELDT
Ridgecrest resident Ethel Cardon Whitnell Heldt died Tuesday, May 21, at High Desert Haven in
Ridgecrest. She was 87.


A memorial service will be held at 10 am on Tuesday, May 28, at Holland & Lyons Chapel in Ridgecrest.
Monsignor Kevin Cleary will officiate. Inurnment will be at Desert Memorial Park in Ridgecrest.
Mrs. Heldt was born Jan. 5, 1915, in Binghampton, Ariz., and was a homemaker. She had been a
resident of Ridgecrest since 1992.


Her family says this about her: “Ethel Cardon Whitnell Heldt was born in Binghampton, Ariz., now part of Tucson, on Jan. 5, 1915. She attended Arizona State Teachers College in Flagstaff, Ariz.


“In 1935, she married Jerome Douglas Whitnell. After the birth of their son, Douglas, they moved to Mesa, Ariz., where he daughter, Gwendolyn, was born. They later lived in the Phoenix, Arix. area.


“After the death of her husband in 1968, she married Arnold “Butch” Heldt. They moved to Peoria, Ariz., spending summers there, and living in Cholla Bay, Sonora, Mexico during the winter seasons. Mr. Heldt died in 1986. In 1992, she moved to Ridgecrest, where her son resides.


“During her years in Mexico, she became an avid shell collector, and also gathered a large collection of ironwood animal sculptures. She was active in the Cholla Bay Sprotsman Club, participating in their
boating and fishing activities.


“She enjoyed reading and crossword puzzles. She also greatly enjoyed regular visits from her friend
“Little Lady”, a small dog belonging to her son.


“A very special friend was Evelyn George, who assisted her in household tasks.”


Mrs. Heldt is survived by: her son Douglas Whitnell and wife Kay of Ridgecrest; daughter Gwendolyn
Whitnell McAdams and husband Richard; grandchildren Jerry Whitnell of Pompano Beach, Fla., Robert
Whitnell and wife Ann Glenn of Greensboro, N.C., Julie Egleston Graham and husband William of
Chalfont, Penn., Natalie Egleston of San Francisco, Patrick Whitnell of Alameda, Brian Egleston of
Baltimore,Md., Cathy Powell and husband Gene of Ridgecrest; Jimmy Schneiter and wife Darlene of
Ridgecrest, Katie Shaughnessy of Bakersfield, Monica McAdams Caffrey and husband Michael of
Roslyn, Penn., Richard McAdams,Jr. and wife Yoko of Willow Grove, Penn., June McAdams Cameron
and husband Robert of Chalfont, Penn, Michael McAdams and wife Michelle of Mullica, N.J., Laureen
McAdams Letizio andhusband Thomas of Ambler, Penn., brothers Stanley Cardon and wife Juliette of
Gilbert, Ariz., Bartley Cardon of Tucson, Ariz., and Helaman Cardon of Mesa, Ariz.; sisters Mary Cardon
Clouse and husband Charles of Mesa, Ariz.; Florence Cardon Jones and husgband Harry of Cedar City,
Urah, Edna Cardon Trejo and Amy Cardon Odell; numerous great-grandchildren and great-grandchildren
of her extended family.


Holland & Lyons Mortuary is assisting the family with arrangements.

Ethel Cardon Whitnell Heldt of Ridgecrest died May 21, 2002 at High Desert Haven. She was 87.

officiated. 


Mrs. Heldt was born Jan 5, 1915, in Binghampton, Ariz. She attended Arizona State Teachers College in
Flagstaff, Ariz., then married Jerome Douglas Whitnell in 1935. After the birth of their son, Douglas, the couple moved to Mesa, Ariz., where their daughter, Gwendolyn, was born. The family later lived in the Phoenix, Ariz. area. 


After the death of her husband in 1958, Ethel married Arnold “Butch” Heldt. They moved to Peoria, Ariz., spending summers there and living in Cholla Bay, Sonora, Mexico, during the winter seasons. Mr. Heldt died in 1986.

She is also survived by her brothers, Stanley Cardon and wife Juliette of Gilbert, Ariz., Bartley Cardon of Tucson, Ariz., and Helaman Cardon of Mesa, Ariz., sisters, Mary Cardon and husband Charles Clouse of Mesa, Ariz., Florence Cardon and husband Harry Jones of Cedar City, Utah, Edna Cardon Trejo and Amy Cardon Odell; and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren in her extended family. 


Inurnment was at Desert Memorial Park. Private cremation and arrangements were provided by Holland
& Lyons Mortuary.
