Brief Life History of Erma Ruth

Erma Ruth Goodman was born on 5 February 1935, in Kirtland, San Juan, New Mexico, United States. Her father, Howard Arthur Goodman, was 35 and her mother, Ella Cardon, was 31.
In the 1940 Census, she is living with her family in Election Precinct 12 Southwest Farmington, San Juan, New Mexico, United States. The family consisted of her father Howard (head of household), age 41, her mother Ella Cardon, age 36, and her siblings Ervin, age 16, Clyde J., age 14, Thomas A., age 14, Geneva, age 10, and herself, Erma Ruth, age 5. On April 1, 1935, they all lived in Kirtland, NM. Howard, Ervin, and Geneva were born in Arizona. Ella was born in Old Mexico, Clyde Thomas, and Erma were born in New Mexico. As per the census, Howard was listed as a farmer on a rented farm working 60 hours per week with Ervin, Clyde, and Thomas listed as helpers on said farm. Ella was listed as doing the housework. In 1939 the family worked on this farm all 52 weeks. It also indicates that Howard had other sources of income besides the farm.
In the 1950 census, Erma was living with her parents, Howard A., age 51, and Ella C., age 46. They lived at 211 Maple in Farmington, San Juan, New Mexico. She was 15 years old. She attended school in 1950. Also in the household was Alice L., age 4, born in New Mexico, Joseph C., age 25, and his wife Elna F., age 21, born in Arizona. Howard and Joseph Clyde are listed as Building Contractors. Not mentioned in the census is that the company was Goodman and Sons Contractors and it also included Ervin and Tom the other two sons of Howard in the business.


Erma is pictured in the 1951, 1952, and 1953 Farmington High School yearbooks called the Naniskad.

Erma married Donald Warren Ausburn November 11, 1954, in Farmington, NM as shown in the Marriage Records of the San Juan County Clerk’s Office; Aztec, New Mexico and contained in the Ancestry.com database on-line. They were blessed with two daughters, Sharla Gae (1956) and Shawna (1959). Many dogs were also part of their family. Don was with the U-Haul company for most of his career.
Known addresses are: In 1978 she and Don were living in Mobile, Alabama. Most of their life they lived in Arizona: 1725 E Pebble Beach Dr., Tempe, Arizona 1984; 7927 E. Natal Ave., Mesa, Arizona 1999; She also maintained a post office box starting in1999, PO Box 6509, Mesa, Arizona. She also is listed in the U.S. Public Records Index, 1950-1993, Volume 2 as owning property in Overgaard, Arizona.

Her father passed away on the 14th of April 1978. She appears as Erma Ruth Ausburn in the obituary as a surviving child. The obituary was published on Sunday, April 16, 1978, in The Arizona Republic on page C33 (digital page 90) and is archived at newspapers.com. She also appeared in her father’s obituary published in The Daily Times (Farmington, NM), April 16, 1978, on page 16A. In this obituary she is listed as Mrs. Erma Ausburn, Mobile, Ala.

Her mother died November 24, 1983, at Mesa Lutheran Hospital. In the obituary, she is listed as a surviving daughter. The obituary was published in The Arizona Republic (Phoenix, AZ), Saturday, November 26, 1983, Page B8 (digital page 32) in the newspapers.com online database referenced in
Ancestry.com. In the obituary printed in the Farmington Daily Times (Farmington, NM), on Saturday, November 26, 1983, Page A5, Erma Ausburn of Tempe, Ariz. is listed as a surviving child.
Her sister, Geneva Palmer, returned to her heavenly Father on July 12, 1999. Erma Ausburn and husband Don, of Mesa, Ariz are listed as survivors in the obituary published in The Daily Times (Farmington, NM) Thursday, July 15, 1999, page A5 as archived in newspapearchive.com.
Her brother Clyde Goodman passed away March 4, 2000, at San Juan Regional Medical Center in Farmington, New Mexico. She is listed as a survivor along with her husband Don, of Mesa, Arizona.
When her sister-in-law, Elna Farnsworth Goodman passed away Sunday, February 17, 2002, she is not referenced by name in the obituary but is included in general as one of her surviving sisters-in-law. Elna married Joseph Clyde Goodman
Her brother Ervin Howard Goodman left this earth on Easter Sunday, April 4, 2010. In the obituary published in The Daily Times (Farmington, NM), Saturday, April 10, 2010, Page B5, she is listed as Erma (Don) Ausburn, a surviving sister.
Her brother, Thomas Arthur “Tom” Goodman died September 26, 2018, and she is listed as a surviving sister in the obituary published in The Daily Times (Farmington, NM), Sunday, October 7, 2018, page 2A.
Her sister-in-law, Milda Cluff Goodman, the wife of Thomas A. Goodman died on March 21, 2019. She was not mentioned in the obituary.
Her sister’s husband, Harold Palmer, passed away on the 13th of September in 2021.
She died on 9 August 2023, in Mesa, Maricopa, Arizona, United States, at the age of 88.
