Ellen Leora Damron Allred, 90, of Safford, passed away on Sunday, September 5, 2010 of a stroke shortly after her 90th birthday. Ellen was born August 29, 1920 in Chandler, AZ, to Eugene Damron and Harriett Moody.

When she was five she moved with her family to the Gila Valley where she lived for the rest of her life. When she was young she excelled at, and lettered in four sports at Thatcher High School.

In 1940 she married J. Grant Allred of Safford and the couple raised 6 children: Gary, Richard & Robert (Twins), Ora, Chris, and Max. The family was later sealed together in the Mesa LDS Temple.

Ellen loved all kinds of dancing, any kind of sport or social event where she was always a lively participant or spectator. She served her church in many capacities: primary teacher (30 years), in the MIA (Young Women), and in the Relief Society. The couple had many friends but, especially, 8 couples with whom they spent many fun times playing games, dancing, and vacationing. In her late years, after the passing of her husband in 1986, Ellen served a one year mission in Houston, TX, and aided the elderly and less active in many different ways.

She is survived by her 6 children, 29 grandchildren, 79 great grandchildren, and one great great granddaughter born 9 days before Ellen’s passing.

Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. on Saturday, September 11, 2010 at the Safford LDS Stake Center. Friends may call on Friday, September 10, from 6-8 p.m. at the Stake Center, and Saturday one hour prior to services at the church. Interment will be in the Thatcher Cemetery.
