On 28 January, four elders in the Iowa Des Moines Mission were killed when their car collided with another vehicle whose occupant, Herman Heckathorn, 90, of Murray, Iowa, was also killed. The four elders, all from Utah, were Daniel Byrne Roundy, 19, of Kaysville; Jared Mont Pulham, 20, of Alpine; Jaysen Ray Christiansen, 20, of Harrisville; and Bradley Alan Savage, 20, of Lehi. The First Presidency issued a message of condolence to the families and loved ones, and individual members of the First Presidency attended the funerals.
Elder Daniel Byrne Roundy, 19, of Kaysville, Utah, completed his earthly mission the afternoon of Friday, Jan. 28, 2000, after involvement in an automobile accident near Osceola, Iowa, where he was serving as a full-time missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Daniel was born June 2, 1980, in Ogden, Utah, to Steven Hale and Neka Fernelius Roundy. Daniel was an Eagle Scout and worked as a counselor at Camps Kiesel and Loll. He graduated in 1998 from Davis High School. He loved sports, especially basketball, soccer, and snowboarding. Daniel attended Ricks College in Rexburg, Idaho, then chose to serve a two-year church mission in the Iowa Des Moines Mission. He expressed his great love for the people in Iowa, and a contagious enthusiasm for sharing with them the Gospel of Jesus Christ. His smile, compassion, sense of humor and twinkle in his eyes will always be remembered. His testimony of Jesus Christ is priceless.
Daniel is survived by his parents, Steven and Neka Roundy; sister, Rebecca, Erin and Katie; grandmother, Alta H. Roundy, Layton; grandparents, Byrne and Jean Fernelius, Chatsworth, California; uncle, Bart Fernelius; and cousins, Eric, Nick and Emma, of Simi Valley, CA; aunt, Sharee Smith, Cheyenne, WY; uncles, Mike and Gary Roundy; and cousins, Scott and Mark Roundy, Angie Henderson, Jenna Andrascik and Kemy Roundy. He is preceded by grandfather Kendall Roundy in passing from this life.
