Short History of Earl and Nan (Nancy Magdelena Christiansen)
Earl and Nan met when she was hired as the schoolteacher in Piedmont and lived in the Guild (then the Cross) Hotel. The story is that neither set of parents approved of the marriage and that is why they eloped. They left Wyoming for Oregon for two reasons. First, Earl had developed rather serious asthma, and the dampness and humidity of Oregon was a better climate for him than the high, dry air of Wyoming. Second, they believed they needed to find a better place to make a living and when the war broke out, the need for people with skills was such that they believed they should move. Aunt Bess’s (Elizabeth) being there was also a factor. When Earl died, they had a funeral in Portland and then went on to Piedmont for the Masonic funeral. He is buried in Evanston, Wyoming in the family plot. (from “The Descendants of Charles Guild and Mary Madaline Cardon” page 18)
