Memorial services for Dwight LeRoy “Spike” Sellers, 79 will be conducted Monday at 11 a.m. at the Bustard Funeral Home in Casper by Rev. Marvin Skogen of Shepherd of the Valley Care Center.
Mr. Sellers died Sept. 18, 1991, in the Veterans Administration Hospital in Cheyenne. He was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, on Feb. 5, 1922 to Allen and Florence (Cross) Sellers. He spent his youth working with his parents on the family sheep ranch, and also working for other ranchers in the Bridger Valley.
After he graduated from Lyman High School in 1940, he ranched full time. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in early 1943, during WWII. Mr. Sellers served in the Medical Corps on the evacuation hospital ship “The Marigold” from the Mediterranean to the Pacific Theatre. He also served during the Italian Campaign and in southern France.
He married Lt. Wilma Hofel, a volunteer nurse in the United States Army, in Japan. Soon after their honorable discharge from the Army, the couple settled in the Bridger Valley where Mr. Sellers was employed in the oil fields. He later took a position as a federal controller.
Mr. Sellers was transferred to Casper in the early 1960s where he took residence. He employed his national award winning skills as a predatory animal controller until his retirement in the mid-1980s. He enjoyed fishing, gardening, traveling and spending time with his grandchildren.
Survivors include three daughters, Carol Odom of Turlock, California, and Patricia L. Cordova and Margaret Wood, both of Casper; two sons, James and Robert Sellers, both of Casper; and 11 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and one son, John A. Sellers. Cremation was handled by Schrader Funeral Home in Cheyenne. Memorials to the Veterans Administration Hospital in Cheyenne would be equally appreciated by the family.
