Dorothy Lucille Beckley Cardon

22 Dec 1921 – 16 Jul 2014

Wife of Royal Dahlstrom Cardon

Dorothy Cardon

Dorothy Lucille Beckley Cardon passed away peacefully in Seattle, WA on July 16 at the age of 92; anxious and ready to be united with her beloved husband, her daughter and her parents.

She was born December 22, 1921 in Stockton, Kansas; the 5th of 7 children born to Samuel Earl Beckley and Bertha Jane Webster Beckley.

Dorothy spent her childhood in Kansas where her father farmed. In 1937 the Beckley family was part of the great American migration. Along with thousands of other farm workers, they were driven from their home by drought, dust and the Great Depression. The family went to Idaho where Earl found work on a farm near Inkom. It was here that Dorothy met Royal Dahlstrom Cardon. They fell in love and were married March 24, 1939.

Royal and Dorothy farmed in Idaho the first years of their marriage until Royal became a carpenter and they lived in various towns in Oregon, Washington and Alaska. Dorothy worked some of those years as a waitress and was one of the original waitresses at the Seattle Space Needle.

In Fairbanks, Alaska she worked at J.C. Penney as a personal shopper. The couple had 5 children – Anna May (died 1995), Royal Stephen (Christine), Priscilla Jane Brown (Gregory), Darcy Marie Kahler (Ray) and Jonette Lucille Atkinson (Michael). In 1958 the family was sealed in the LDS Idaho Falls temple.

After retiring in Alaska, Royal and Dorothy returned to Idaho, living outside Caldwell. In 1984 they served a genealogy mission for the LDS church. Dorothy also served as Relief Society President. In 1994 Royal passed away and, after his death, Dorothy served a second genealogy mission in Salt Lake City.

The last years of her life were spent in the Seattle area. Dorothy was a fun, pretty lady whose hand-made gifts, beautiful paintings and lovely garden reflected her love for nature and beauty. Her children and grandchildren treasure memories of gathering in her home, greeted with wonderful dinners of home grown fruits and vegetables and freshly baked bread. At Grandma’s there was always laughter from busy ladies in the kitchen and from cousins playing games on the living room floor. Her arms scooped up the babies and rocked them to sleep and her hands made dresses and pajamas for little girls and boys. She was a true homemaker whose talents were enhanced by love.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband Royal, her daughter Anna May, her sisters Hazel, Creta and Dorma and her brothers Wilbur and Delbur. She is survived by 4 children and their spouses, her sister Beulah Fowler, brother-in-law Grant Nelson, sister-in-law Jo Beckley, 22 grandchildren, 72 great-grandchildren and 9 great-great-grandchildren.

Services were held Tuesday, July 22 at the LDS Chapel located at 23644 Old Hwy 30, Caldwell. Viewing was at 10:00 am; with service at 11:00 am.
