Mother of Shannon “Toad” Lee Brewer

SUNSET — Dixie Lee Jensen, 62, passed away August 8, 2003, at Heritage Park Care Center, after a long struggle with failing health. She was born June 9, 1941, in Hyrum, Utah, the youngest child of Charles Vern and Maneta Cummings Jensen. She graduated from South Cache High School in 1959, and moved to Salt Lake City with her sister, Bonne Jensen, where they then spent the next few years supporting the Salt Lake Bees baseball team and having all the fun two single sisters can legally have. In 1963, while working at The Ambassador Club, Dixie met and later married Ron Brewer, only to divorce him in 1964. She then moved back to Hyrum, Utah, where she had their daughter, Shannon (Toad) Brewer.
Dixie later took a job at Hill Air Force base, moving to Sunset in 1967. She worked part time at the Hi-Hat Cafe in Sunset, making friends with many of the local police officers. Her outgoing personality helped her to make many friends, both at the Hi-Hat and at Hill Field. During her career at the base, she worked in POL and was the “mother” to the POL summer party for several years in the 1970″s, a task she truly enjoyed doing, and that her co-workers always found memorable. After leaving POL for MM and a career as a logistician in item management, she discovered she had a flair for being a war planner and served in that capacity during Desert Storm after her graduation from War Planner’s college in Montgomery, Alabama. She retired from Hill in 1993, turning her attention to her favorite hobby, needlework.
Dixie was a wonderful cross-stitcher, winning two ribbons at the state fair for her projects. She also could knit anything she put her mind to, adapting patterns to suit the idea in her mind and coming up with many beautiful one-of-a-kind items. She owned a small business named “Carousel Crafts”, which traveled to small fairs and sold her handmade items, as well as those of her sister, Bonne, and daughter, Shannon. She thoroughly enjoyed these outdoor boutiques, only giving them up when the arthritis in her knees made it too difficult to walk across the uneven ground and set up their booth.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles Vern and Maneta Cummings Jensen, her sister, Bonne (Boots) Jensen, brother Kay V Jensen, sister-in-law Carol Jensen, brother-in-law Evan Jonas, and great-nephew, Travis Jonas.
She is survived by her daughter, Shannon “Toad” Brewer, a sister Lona Jonas, and her nieces and nephews, Connie (Ron) Cooper, Les (Carol) Jonas, Paul (Connie) Jonas, Janeal (Tim) Burgert, Dee (Jill) Jonas, Susan Kish, Shelly (Keith) Van Dyke, Wayne (Rebecca) Jensen, Rick (JoAnn) Jensen, and Debra (Steve) Johnson, her “extra kid” Scott Cardon, 31 great nieces and nephews, 22 great-great nieces and nephews, and her best “non-human” friend, her cat, JayDee.
Her daughter would like to thank Dr. Richard Wallin and Dr. Steven Warren, along with the staff at Heritage Park Care Center, and Hospice of Utah for their wonderful care during the last months of Dixie”s life.
A memorial service will be held Thursday, August 14, at 4 p.m. at Lindquist Clearfield Mortuary, 1050 S. State. Friends may call two hours prior. An additional gathering for family and friends will be held on Saturday, August 16, 2003, at 12:00 noon at the Hyrum City Cemetery.
