Dean Charles Fletcher, 68, of St. George, Utah, died at his home on Tuesday morning, March 20, 1990, of cancer.
Born in Logan, Utah July 14, 1921, to Calvin and Susette Ricks Fletcher. Dean attended Logan’s public schools, received both his B.S. and M.S. degrees from Utah State University and earned his Ph.D in biochemistry at the University of Delaware in 1951.
On April 5, 1944, he and Ann Louise Barber were married in the Logan LDS Temple. They became the parents of three daughters, Louise Rupp, La Crescenta, California; Susette Green, Salt Lake City; and Ellen Roundy, Oakley, Idaho; all of whom with their husbands, Richard Rupp, Fred Green and Jerry Round and thirteen grandchildren, survive. Dean is also survived by 11 brothers and sisters, Joel Fletcher, Ruth Jenkins, and Myrle Miner, Logan; Susette Budge, Idaho Falls, Idaho; Beth Snow, Palm Harbor, Florida; Herbert, Ft. Collins, Colorado; Edith Francis, Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada; Margaret Marshall, Mantua, Utah; Robert, Ogden, Utah; Joseph, Salt Lake City; Dale, Mesa, Arizona. He was preceded in death by a sister, Sarah Yardley and a brother, Harvey.
During World War II, Dean served at various stations in the U.S., the South Pacific, and Japan. He received the Army Commendation Ribbon for his leadership as Adjutant and Personnel Officer for Headquarters and Service Group, both in Manila, Philippines and at Tokyo, Japan.
A beloved and influential teacher and advisor to hundreds of college students at Utah State University, the University of Delaware, the University of Nevada-Reno, and Washington State University, he also had been director of the section on Food Sciences of the American Medical Association in Chicago and director of planning of the Colleges of Health Sciences at the University of Utah and University of Kentucky.
Dean was a devoted and faithful Latter-day Saint and had served as Bishop in Reno, Nevada and Pullman, Washington and in the Reno North Stake Presidency. Each community in which he lived benefited from his civic service.
He was a fellow of the American Institute of Chemists, of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences, and a member of numerous professional and honor societies including Sigma Xi, American Chemical Society, American Association for the Advancement of Science and the New York Academy of Sciences. He was the recipient of Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary Award for Cancer Research for 1967-68.
A kind and gentle husband, father, grandfather and friend, Dean’s memory will be tenderly guarded in the hearts of those who loved him.
Funeral services will be held Friday, 2 p.m., at the Bloomington 6th Ward Chapel, 3519 Manzanita Road, where friends may call an hour and a half prior to the services. Interment, St. George City Cemetery under the direction of Metcalf Mortuary. In lieu of flowers, friends may contribute to the Dean C.
