Carl David Nyman passed away peacefully, circled by his loving family August 8, 2021. David was born August 25, 1937, in North Logan, Utah to Carl Nelson and Jean Burrell Nyman.

He attended Utah State University where he received a BFA in Music Education in and a Master of Music Performance. He also received a Master of Music from the American University where he studied with the Master Symphony and its director, Werner Lywen. He Studied at the US Naval School of Music in Washington D.C. and was a special consultant at the Conservatory of Music in LaPaz, Boliva in April – May 1987 where he was made an honorary citizen of Oruru, Bolivia.

David married Constance Waldron in 1960 (later divorced) To this union his daughter, the light of his life, Christa Lyn was born. She was born while he was stationed in Bremerhaven, Germany with the US Army Band. David and Carol Ann Parry were married February 21, 1975, and this brought 3 bonus children into his life, Julie, Kirk and Mark.

Music was a huge part of David’s life, and he conducted and performed with many bands and orchestras, including the Utah Golden Spike Orchestra, Weber State Community Orchestra, and was the Music and String teacher for Box Elder County for several years. In 1970 he became the Director of Music at SUSC (now Southern Utah University) where he spent the next 30 years. He loved working with the students under his care and made many lifelong friendships. He has served on the board of directors and as chairman of the Cedar City Music Arts program since 1972 and was the musical director for 2 seasons of the Utah Shakespeare Festival.

David loved the bagpipes and was the Founder of the Scarlet and Black Ceremonial Bagpipe band and the Highland Heritage Festival. He directed the Band and Festival for 10 years. He was always happy to tell stories of his time in London where he learned the ins and outs of putting together the band and festival to include all the proper traditions and ceremonies.

He was a member of the United States Army Band and his position there afforded him the opportunity to conduct the Queen of England’s Coldstream Guard Regimental Band and play his French horn as part of a quartet who played for King Frederick IX of Denmark when he was visiting President Eisenhower.

The Sigma Nu was also very near and dear to his heart. He has been a member of the Fraternity 34 years. Many lasting friendships and memories are associated with those people he met and worked with. He was sworn in as the Regent of Sigma Nu where he was responsible for over 500 chapters in the US and Canada. During the 2 years he served as Regent, he was able to visit over 200 of these chapters.

David retired in 2001 as the Associate Dean of Continuing Education at Southern Utah University. He thought retirement was a bit boring, so he went back to work as the Executive Director of the Heritage Center and Festival Hall until 2011.

David loved traveling with his wife, painting, sports cars and outdoor activities like boating, camping, fishing, and riding “the machines”. (4-wheelers)

David was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day saints. He is survived by his wife Carol Ann of 46 years. His daughter, Christa (Alan) Cardon, of Cedar City, Utah; Stepchildren, Julie Groo (Donny Cook), of Tacoma Washington; Kirk (Becca) Jones of Cedar City, Utah; and Mark (Lisa) Jones of Atlanta, Georgia. He is also survived by a brother, Jeffrey Lyn (Rose) Nyman of Payson, Utah. He will be remembered lovingly by 13 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl Nelson Nyman and Jean Burrell Nyman. Brothers Gary, Dennis, and Robert and a sister, Lana.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, August 14, 2021 at 11:00 am at the Mesa Hills Ward Chapel, 1925 W 320 S, Cedar City, UT. Viewings will be held at Southern Utah Mortuary, 190 N 300 W, Cedar City, UT on Friday, August 13, 2021 from 6-8:00 pm and on Saturday, August 14, 2021 from 9-10:00 am. Interment will be in the Cedar City Cemetery under the direction of Southern Utah Mortuary. Online condolences can be made at www.sumortuary.com.
