Bruce William Warren, 85, of Orem, Utah passed away Friday, July 26, 2013, in Lehi, Utah. He was born January 26, 1928, in Lyman, Wyoming to Katie Heiner Guild and Melvin Warren. They were later divorced. Then his mother married Levi O. Walker and her three boys were sealed to him. It made a rather large family since Levi already had 16.
He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served in the U.S. Navy during World Ward II and then a mission for the LDS Church. His mission began in the East Central States Mission which was then divided, leaving Bruce in the Central Atlantic States Mission. He served many years as a Lakeridge 4th Ward Librarian and home teacher and doing regular early morning Temple assignments at the Provo Temple. Later he served as an ordinance worker at the Mt. Timpanogos Temple.
He married Elaine Dalley Winters on August 1, 1950 in the Logan Temple. She died July 3, 1996. They had seven children, but were saddened by the early loss of their first three children, Irene, Mark and Gena. Surviving four children are: Nancy W. Vandenhazel and her husband Dean, Eagle Mountain, Utah; Robert W. Warren and his wife Diane, Logan, Utah; Helen W. Bailey and her husband Kurt, Bellevue, Washington and Kathy W. Woodsbury, Mt. Pleasant, Utah. There are 19 grandchildren and five step-grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and four step great-grandchildren to date.
Bruce William Warren began his study of archaeology, anthropology, and ancient history in 1948. He earned a B.A. from BYU, and M.A. and Ph.D. in anthropology at the University of Arizona at Tucson. He spent nine years in southern Mexico with the New World Archaeological Foundation doing field and museum research between the years of 1955-1964. The summers of 1976-1977 he spent in Israel engaged in archaeological research. He was leading scholar in his ability to read Mayan hieroglyphs and ancient Mesoamerican codices. Warren is the author of several publications. He has taught Book of Mormon and Biblical archaeology classes at Brigham Young University since 1972.
He married Patricia Magdelene Murphy on November 24, 2000.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, August 3, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. at the Lakeridge 4th Ward Chapel, 158 East 1100 South, Orem. A viewing will be held one hour prior for family, friends, colleagues, and former students.
