After being confined to her bed for more than two years, Mrs. Alpha May Smoot, wife of Senator Reed Smoot of Utah, died at o’c7lock this morning at her home, 2521 Connecticut avenue. She was 65 years old. Mrs. Smoot’s death followed a general physical breakdown about two years ago.

She was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, on August 6, 1863, a daughter of Horace S and Chloe Redfield Eldredge.

Married in 1884.

On September 17, 1884, she was married to Reed Smoot. The were the parents of six children–Harold R. Smoot, Chloe Smoot Cardon, Annie K. Rebentisch, Harlow E. Smoot, Zella Ester Nibley and Ernest W. Smoot.

In a tribute to his wife, Senator Smoot said: “She was above all a wonderful home maker. Her shole life revolved around her family and her home and she managed the latter with superb ability.”

Shortly after Mrs. Smoot came to Washington with her husband, 26 years ago, she began to acquire a reputation for hospitable entertainment in her home.

Had Entertained Presidents.

During her years here Mrs. Smoot was hostess to Presidents Roosevelt, Taft, Harding and Coolidge at dinner parties, as well as scores of other prominent public officials and representatives of foreign nations.

Mrs. Smoot was ever generous in charitable causes, but most of her work along this line was done individually.

Despite the fact that she spent most of her time in her home, Mrs. Smoot took an active interest in politics, and Senator Smoot has been quoted as saying his wife was “a great factor in whatsoever success he attained.”

While in Utah she was a member of the Republican Women’s Club of that State, and in Washington belonged to the Wifes of Senators’ Club.

MRS. ALPHA M. SMOOT

Services for Mrs. Alpha May Smoot, wife of Senator Reed Smoot of Utah, will be held Sunday at the family home in Provo, Utah. Mrs. Smoot died Wednesday at her home in the 2500 block of Connecticut Ave. N. W. after an illness of almost two years. Her body was accompanied to Utah by members of the family.

Her death was the result of a general physical breakdown about two years ago. She was 65 years old. Mrs. Smoot, the daughter of Horace S. and Chloe Redfield Eldridge, was born in Salt Lake City on August 6, 1863.

Senator and Mrs. Smoot were married September 17, 1884, and have six children. The are Harold R. Smoot, Chloe Smoot Cardon, Annie K. Rebentisch, Harlow E. Smoot, Zella Esther Nibley and Ernest W. Smoot.

Mrs. Smoot was well known in the social life of Washington during the 26 years that she lived here.

She also spent a large part of her time in charitable work, the greater part of which was of an individual nature. She had a great interest in politics and is described by Senator Smoot as “a great factor in whatever success he attained.”

Mrs. Smoot was a member of the Wives and Senators Club and the Republican Women’s Club in Utah.

Mrs. Smoot whose maiden name was Alpha May Eldredge, the daughter of Horace S. and Chloe Redfield Eldredge, was born at Salt Lake City, Utah, August 6, 1863. After studying at Deseret university, Utah, she was married to Reed Smoot on September 17, 1884. Three sons and three daughters were born to them. They are: Harold R., Harlow E., Ernest W., Mrs. Chloe Smoot Cardon, Mrs. Annie K. Rebentisch and Mrs. Zella Ester Nibley.

The senator said that Mrs. Smoot had taken “an interest in politics as long as her health permitted” and credited her with a large part in whatever success he had attained.

MRS. REED SMOOT DIES
AFTER LONG ILLNESS

WASHINGTON, Nov. 7–(I N.S.)–Mrs. Reed Smoot, wife of Senator Smoot of Utah, died at 7:20 a.m., today after a lingering illness.

The body will be taken to Provo, Utah, Mrs. Smoot’s for funeral services, it was announced at the home.

Mrs. Smoot was born August 6, 1863, at Salt Lake City, Utah, and was educated at private school and the Desert University. She married Sen. Smoot September 17, 1884. She is survived by six children, Harold R. Smoot, Chloe Smoot Cardon, Annie K. Rebentisch, Harlow E. Smoot, Zella Ester Nibley and Ernest W. Smoot.

Grant, Ivins and Brimhall Will Be Speakers
At Impressive Tribute in Stake
Tabernacle.

Heber J. Grant and A. W. Ivins of the first presidency of the L. D. S. church, and Dr. George H. Brimhall, president emeritus of Brigham Young university, will be the speakers at funeral services for Mrs. Alpha ZM. Smoot, wife of Senator Reed Smoot, at the Utah stake tabernacle this afternoon at 2 o’clock.

The body arrived at the Smoot home in Provo from Washington, D.C., where Mrs. Smoot died Wednesday, late Saturday afternoon. Accompanying the body were Senator Smoot, his daughter, Mrs. Chloe Smoot Cardon, who attended her mother during her last illness, his sons, Harold R. and Ernest Smoot. They were met at Salt Lake by Mrs. Carlyle Nibley, Mrs. Annie K. Rebentisch, daughters of Senator and Mrs. Smoot, and their son, Harlow; Ms. Ida Smoot Dusenberry, sister of the senator; Mrs. LeGrand Richards, Mrs. Smoot’s sister, and her husband; Mrs. Harlow Smoot and other members of the family and friends.

Bishop Whitehead Presides-

Bishop Walter P. Whitehead of the Provo First ward, in which ward the Smoots lived for many years, will preside at the funeral services. The invocation will be by George Albert Smith of the Quorum of the Twelve.

“I Know That My Redeemer Lives” will be sung by Prof. A. C. Lund, director of the Salt Lake tabernacle choir. Other musical numbers will be given by the tabernacle choir. The dedicatory prayer at the Provo city cemetery will be offered by President C. W. Nibley.

The casket will not be opened prior to the services, it is announced by members of the family.

Pallbearers Named-

The pallbearers will be James A. Eldredge, B. R. Smoot, Adelbert Eldredge, Ben R. Eldredge, Parley Smoot and A. O . Smoot.

Among those who tendered their respects to the memory of Mrs. Smoot at Salt Lake Saturday, were President Heber J. Grant, Mrs. Susa Young Gates, Anthony W. Ivins, Charles W. Nibley, Charles M. Morris, E. R. Carlisle, Shirley F. Jones, James H. Anderson, Mrs. Jenni Musser, Isaac Stewart, Senator Smoot’s secretary; Joseph T. Farrer, J. A. Buttle, Col. C. H. Loche and Bishop Walter P. Whitehead.
