Young Ray Fred Blake
Young Ray Fred Blake
Ray Fred Blake Jr.

Ray Fred Blake Jr., our beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, patriarch of our family & friend to all, passed away peacefully, Tuesday morning, November 1st, 2022, at his home in Bountiful, Utah. He was tenderly cared for and surrounded by those he loved.

Ray was born on October 22, 1942 in Solomon, Arizona and surprised us all by living to the age of 80! Ray was the second of five children born to Ray Fred Blake Sr. and Clara Cardon Blake. He was the rock of his siblings; Jeannette, Carroll, Marilyn and Jesse. When Ray was 8, the family moved to Holbrook Arizona, where he lived until he graduated from high school. When Ray was in the 5th grade, he contracted Rheumatic Fever and missed the whole school year, but through his tenacity, he kept up his studies. Ray graduated from Holbrook High School where he was Student Body President, ran track and played football.

He served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Scotland from 1962-1964 and was assistant to the President. He graduated from Arizona State University in 1967 in Education. That same year, he married the love of his life, Susan Kay Kocherhans, in the Mesa Arizona Temple. Together they raised three children; Stephanie, Scott and Jennifer. Ray began teaching middle school right out of college, and the kids loved him. He was close to becoming a vice principal when he was recruited to work in property management. He received his real estate license and began teaching Shopping Center Management teams at Michigan State University, Arizona State University and Purdue University. He was the director of Asset Management for Collier Heinz and Associates, overseeing properties in Virginia, North Carolina, Missouri, New Mexico, Arizona, California, Montana and Utah. He became a senior partner with CHA until he retired in 2009. He was co-owner of Keva Juice in New Mexico and Utah and partnered with his son Scott, in real estate ventures.

Ray was a lifelong member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He and Susan served as docents at the Church Museum of History and Art. Ray served in Bishoprics, as a High Priest Group Leader, on the High Council, as a Scout Master, a Seminary teacher, and most recently as an ordinance worker in the Bountiful Utah Temple. However, the most fun he had was serving the little children with Susan in the nursery.

Ray loved to snow ski and took his children most Saturdays. Their favorite part was taking off their boots, warming their feet by the fire and getting hot chocolate in the lodge. Ray competed in numerous marathons and 10K races. Though he never reached his goal to qualify for the Boston Marathon, he had a lot of fun trying. Ray loved the outdoors and beautifying his impeccable yard. Ray’s greatest joy came in spending time with his family. He made each grandchild feel special and they all adored him. Most Friday nights, two or three grandkids would call him up and ask to come over for a sleepover where they would play games, eat popcorn and watch movies. In the morning, Ray would take them all to breakfast. Ray’s favorite activities were spent with his family at Disneyland, the beach, BYU football games, Jazz games, traveling to Europe, Mexico, South America, Canada, the Middle East and throughout the US. Summer vacations included a trip to Lake Powell, soaking up the sun and playing cards on the top deck of the houseboat. Ray loved an ice-cold Coke, a bowl of green chile verde and chips and salsa from his favorite Mexican restaurant, La Hacienda. Ray always made holiday family programs a special time to get together and reflect on the Savior. Ray’s love for teaching and helping others brought him great joy in his life and earned him the respect of all who came in contact with him. Ray’s positive nature elicited his famous response to most situations, “Life is Good!”. Ray had a tender heart and helped numerous people not only financially but lifted their spirits and made them feel valued and loved by our Heavenly Father through his actions. He did not like negative talk about others and quickly, yet kindly, silenced any criticism. His unwavering faith and his deep love for his Savior, permeated all aspects of his life. His legacy of hard work, generosity, patience, integrity, long suffering, meekness, service and Christlike love, will live on with those whose lives he has touched.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Ray Fred Blake Sr. & Clara Cardon Blake, his siblings; Jeannett Hubbard (Dale-living), Marilyn Blake and Jesse Blake. He is survived by his wife, Susan Kay Kocherhans Blake, his children; Stephanie Blake Getter (Bruce), Scott (Robyn) Blake, Jennifer Blake Carroll (Brent), grandchildren; Dallon Getter, Colton Getter, Makena Getter Aragon (Joshua), Cardon Getter, Jace Carroll, Bryan Carroll, Miranda Carroll, Adam Carroll, Ashton Blake, Savannah Blake, Aubrie Blake, his sister Carroll Brockman and many nieces and nephews. The Blake family would like to thank Dr. Joshua Oaks, Dr. Brent Muehlstein, Dr. Belisario Arango, and Ray’s kind nighttime nurse, Mallika Veetut, who tenderly took care of their beloved husband and father! Ray requested that In lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Self Reliance program of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Gayla Barker Cardon

St. George, Utah – Gayla Barker Cardon, age 75, returned peacefully to her Heavenly Father on December 4, 2010, with family members by her side.

She was born May 23, 1935 in Escalante, Utah to Theo Barker and Nell Davis Barker.

Gayla was raised in Escalante, Utah, with her siblings – older brother Hal Barker (deceased) and younger sister Betty Jean Barker of St. George, Utah.

Gayla married Paul Marshall Cardon on May 23, 1955, for time and eternity in the Manti LDS Temple. Paul’s first wife died in 1954, leaving him with four children – two grown up and two still living at home. Gayla cared for her stepchildren, and she and Paul also raised two sons and a daughter of their own.

During the early years of their marriage, Gayla and Paul moved to where there was work – Salt Lake City and Kanab, Utah; South and North Dakota; and finally to St. George in the early 1960’s. Gayla wanted to raise their family in their own home, so to help pay for a house, she went to work for Wilkinson Electric and Lighting about 1966 and worked there for 35 years. She was loved and respected by many builders and developers in Southwest Utah for her knowledge and assistance in choosing materials, lighting, and appliances for new homes and renovations.

Gayla cherished her children and grandchildren and always made sure they felt welcome in her home. Over the years, Gayla became the true matriarch of her extended family, and she and Paul often welcomed grandchildren to stay in their home for extended periods as they searched for purpose in life or dealt with life’s challenges. She was always loving, non-judgmental and available for help and advice. She has blessed many young lives.

Gayla loved gardening and enjoyed the attached greenhouse on the back of her home. She also spent several years doing family history and looked forward to performing weekly ordinance work at the St. George LDS Temple.

Gayla is survived by her stepsons: Ferrel G. (Nancy) Roundy of Taft, California, Paul Michael (Karen) Cardon of Ithaca, New York; her children: Bruce Charles (Jacqueline) Cardon of St. George, Utah, Phillip William (Dana) Cardon of Wasilla, Alaska and Susan (Mike) Smith of St. George, Utah; a sister, Betty Jean Barker of St. George, Utah; 13 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.

Obituary of Leah Cardon

28 Jun 1919 – 16 Jul 2011

Wife of Robert Mansel Cardon

FARMINGTON, NM
Leah Tanner Cardon
June 28, 1919 – July 16, 2011

Leah Tanner Cardon, 92, of Farmington, a lifetime resident of San Juan County, passed away of natural causes on Saturday, July 16, 2011. She died peacefully in her home, with characteristic dignity and grace, surrounded by members of her loving family. Leah was born June 28, 1919, in Kirtland, the third child of Donald and Mamie Taylor Tanner.
In spite of losing her mother in a tragic accident, she flourished in the small town atmosphere of Kirtland, surrounded by many relatives and friends.
When her father married Ruth McGee, the family moved to Allison, Colo., where her father operated a flour mill. Leah continued her education in Allison until she reached the 9th grade. In order to finish high school, she moved back to Kirtland, where she lived with her beloved Aunt Peg and Uncle Hugh Foutz and their family.
In 1937, she graduated with honors from Central High School. As was the case with most Central High students, the educator who made the greatest impact on her life was Mrs. Grace B. Wilson. From Mrs. Wilson, Lea gained a life-long love of literature and the cultural arts, which she passed on to her children.
In 1940, Leah served as a full-time missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Eastern Canadian Mission. She later attended the business college in Albuquerque.
Shortly after the end of World War II, she married Robert “Bob” M. Cardon, on April 3, 1946, in the Idaho Falls Temple. Leah was married to Bob for 54 years. Together, they raised a family of eight children. This proved to be her greatest mission in life. She was an extraordinary mother and grandmother. Her posterity love and honor her name and her example.
Leah was a good citizen, avidly involved and interested in the welfare of the country. She served as an outstanding and well-loved teacher in the LDS church. Leah particularly enjoyed teaching teenagers within the Seminary Education system.
Leah was a blend of humor, intellect, modesty, courage, and deep personal spiritual strength. A friend to all, especially to the elderly, she served wherever she saw a need. Her quiet, “behind the scenes” acts of service have left a legacy that will never be forgotten.
Leah was preceded in death, on July 25, 2000, by her husband, Robert M. Cardon; and, on Jan. 13, 1991, by her son, Robert D. (Butch) Cardon; her parents, Donald and Mamie Taylor Tanner, brothers, Wayne, Harold, Halworth and Tommy Tanner; sister, Marie Tanner, Helen Tanner Stradling and Ramona Tanner; maternal grandparents, Elmer Franklin Taylor and Mary Steele Taylor; paternal grandparents, Joseph Baldwin and Nora Foutz Tanner; and one great-grandchild.
Leah is survived by her sons, Doug Cardon and wife, Jan, Sam Cardon and wife, Tammy, Jim Cardon and wife, Cari; daughters, Pam Jones and husband Wes, Diane Smith, Kathie Kempton and husband, Greg, and Peggy Avery and husband, Ron; brothers, Collin Tanner, Dave Tanner, Jim Tanner and Steve Tanner; sisters, Ann Tanner and Donna Tanner; 39 grandchildren, 68 great-grandchildren and five on the way; and many dear friends.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, July 22, at Brewer, Lee & Larkin Funeral Home, 103 E. Ute St. in Farmington.
Funeral services for Leah will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 23, at The Church of Jesus Christ Latter-day Saints, 400 W. Apache St., Apache Building, with Mike Isaacson conducting.
Leah will then be interred next to her husband at the Kirtland-Fruitland Cemetery.
Pallbearers are Garrett Jones, Adam Cardon, Matt Smith, Cardon Kempton, Paul McPherson, Tyler Cardon, Todd Cardon and Nathan Kempton.
Honorary pallbearers are Leah’s grandsons Mike Jones, Ben McPherson, Jess Smith, Dallas Smith, Jacob Smith, Michael Smith, Matt Cardon, Luke Jones, Todd Cardon, Taylor Kempton and Ethan Richardson.
The Cardon family wishes to thank Northwest New Mexico Hospice and Home Care for the kindness shown to our mother.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made in Leah’s memory to Northwest New Mexico Hospice, 608 Reilly Ave, Farmington, NM 87401.
