Cardon Family Organization Honoree 2019
Ray F. Blake
Ray Fred Blake was born on October 22, 1942 in Solomonville, AZ to Ray Fred Blake Sr. and Clara Cardon. The second of five children, he is a great-great grandson of Louis Philippe and Susette Stale. Ray grew up in Holbrook Arizona where he played football and was Student Body President of his class. He served his mission to Scotland and afterward, married his sweetheart, Susan Kay Kocherhans in the Mesa Arizona temple. They have 3 children, Stephanie Getter, Scott Blake, Jennifer Carroll and have 11 grandchildren. He graduated from Arizona State University and taught school for a few years before starting a career in property management and development where he became a partner in Collier, Heinz and Associates. After retiring, Ray became involved with the Cardon Families Organization, leading one of the first Cardon family tours to Italy in 2002. Since then, he has served on the reunion committee and in 2013 served as Chair or President.
Ray is always the first to lend a helping hand, leading by example with his Christ-like love and service. In his free time, Ray loves to garden, read and travel with his family, but mostly, he and Susan enjoy being with their children and grandchildren. Ray continues to work on family history and currently serves in the Bountiful Utah Temple as an ordinance worker. Ray has always had great respect and love for his ancestors and has instilled this love in his posterity. We are grateful for the countless hours Ray has worked, furthering the genealogical work and helping to make the Cardon reunions and tours a success!
Speakers’ Biographical Information
Brenda Nelson Miles was born in Boston, MA. She is the daughter of Russell M. and Dantzel Nelson. She moved to Utah with her parents when she was one. She has 8 sisters and 1 brother. She attended East High School in Salt Lake City, and later graduated from the University of Utah in Early Childhood Education. She taught Kindergarten for 4 years. She married Richard Miles in the Salt Lake Temple and has 5 children and 14 grandchildren, with another on the way.
Brenda has lived in Bountiful, Utah for 35 years. She has served in many callings in the Church including Ward YW President, and as Counselor and President in Stake YW. She and her husband, Richard, presided over the Alpine German-Speaking Mission in 2011-2014. She currently serves as a temple ordinance worker in the Bountiful Temple. She loves music, and singing, and plays the flute and piano. She also enjoys preserving family memories through scrapbooking.
Boyd Matheson: As the Opinion Editor and Head of Strategic Reach for the Deseret News, Matheson’s job is to ensure that the Deseret News is shaping critical conversations through elevated dialogue. He is helping guide the once-local newspaper to reflect a broader national readership and online following through a bold, principle-centered voice. Prior to joining the Deseret News, he served as the chief of staff for US Senator Mike Lee, as president of the public policy think tank Sutherland Institute, and spent years as an international business strategist. Boyd is a regular media contributor, convener of thought leaders and is recognized as a voice of reason and principle.
Tom and Gayle Holdman: Due to a lifelong speech impediment, Tom Holdman expresses himself best through art. He started “speaking” through glass after his mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Dallas, TX. Twenty-eight years later, he owns two international art glass studios with outstanding creative teams, which have produced pieces for civic buildings, private residences and religious edifices around the globe. The Roots of Knowledge project at UVU is the studios’ most extensive project to date and has received worldwide attention and acclaim, being called, “one of the most spectacular stained-glass windows made in the past century.” (The Guardian Newspaper, UK).
Tom’s wife, Gayle, served a mission in northern Chile and speaks fluent Spanish. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Family Science from BYU, is certified in Applied Positive Psychology and is a co-author of the best-selling book, Come Unto Me, detailing the stained-glass portrayal of the life and ministry of Christ created for the Rome Temple Visitor’s Center. She splits her time between raising their 3 awesome children, working as a designer, writer and a public relations representative for their studios, and learning additional languages so she can be of greater assistance in their international work and better love and serve God’s children around the world.
Tom and Gayle were recently honored with the Days of ’47 Pioneers of Progress Award for Historic and Creative Arts. Together they have worked on over 90 LDS temples, some of the more recent being the Paris, Rome, Tokyo, Lisbon and Rio de Janeiro locations.
With their talented team at Holdman Studios they are creating the first windows towards their monumental dream, Roots of Humanity, which will focus on the highest and most noble characteristics the human soul is capable of and how we are one people on this planet.
