Alfred Starr, born March 14, 1942, in Logan, Utah, spent his childhood in Pullman, Washington. Following two years in the U.S. Army, he graduated from WSU and with wife, Susan, he moved to Seattle to earn his MA in political science from the U.W. Al first worked for the Washington State Employment Security Department and the City of Tacoma prior to creating The Private Industry Council serving both King County and the City of Seattle. The PIC developed numerous job-retraining programs such as for homeless women via YWCA, both Fair Start and Fair Chance programs, in addition to special skill programs for schools.
Known for his enthusiasm for the outdoors, Al hiked and climbed Washington’s mountains, jogged Greenlake, tended to his roses, and later enjoyed yoga with his Ballard “tribe.” Al retired in 2000, and enjoyed extensive travels, classical music, especially Spanish guitar and Baroque, and reading Scandinavian mysteries.
Al died on November 18, 2021, and will be truly missed and dearly remembered by all as he was a true gentleman: kind, non-judgmental, caring, a man of integrity, with a wry sense of humor and sweet smile.
He is preceded in death by his parents Warren and Faye Cardon Starr, his brother Dean Starr and sister MaryAnne Gass.He is survived by his wife Susan and many adoring nieces, nephews and cousins.In lieu of flowers, donations to Doctors Without Borders or a charity of your choice would be appreciated. A spring memorial is planned.
