Harold Spencer Budge 1931 ~ 2008 Surrounded by loved ones, Harold Spencer Budge passed away quietly at home on Sept. 21, 2008, in Mapleton, Utah, after a lifetime of farming, ranching, teaching psychology/counseling at BYU, “rockhounding,” hunting, raising roses, fathering, and grand-fathering.
He was born October 19, 1931, to Cyril S. Budge and Moselle Michaelson in Logan, Utah. During the winter months he was raised on their farm in Paris, Idaho, living in great-grandfather William Budge’s beautiful old home. Harold attended Emerson Elementary and Fielding High School. In the summertime he worked as a cowboy on his father’s and uncles’ cattle ranch, The Budge Land and Livestock Company, Nounan, Idaho.
He served an honorable mission to the Northern States Mission. Upon returning he joined the U.S. Army. In 1953 he married Viona Wuthrich in the Logan Temple. They spent their honeymoon and the next two years at Fort Richardson, Anchorage, Alaska. During this time, they served as missionaries in the LDS branch.
Dr. Budge attended Utah State University, University of Utah, and Stanford University. He taught and counseled students for 38 years at Brigham Young University.
Harold and Viona raised their family in Orem, Utah. He enjoyed his many church callings, but especially his time as Bishop of a BYU married student ward. Upon retiring to Mapleton, Utah, he served a second mission with Viona in the Anchorage, Alaska CES Mission.
He is survived by his wife, Viona, and children, Pam (Tom) Tippetts, Mapleton, UT; Janet (Kimball) Hansen, Thatcher, Arizona; Kathy (Scott) Cardon, Mt. Green, UT; Cyril Budge (deceased), Edward (Patti) Budge, Mapleton, UT; 19 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and two brothers, Ned and Wayne Budge.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, September 26, 2008, at 10:30 a.m. in the Mapleton Stake Center at 970 N. 400 E. There will be a viewing at Wheeler Mortuary, 82 W. 400 N. in Mapleton and at the church one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in the Paris Cemetery, Paris, Idaho.
